The USS Schurz, lost off the North Carolina coast in 1918, was an armed cruiser built in 1894 as the SMS Geier for the German Imperial Navy. Using both sail and steam for propulsion, the USS Schurz (Geier) is a unique archaeological record of this transition to mechanical propulsion power. This USS Schurz Distinctive Diver Specialty, available only at Olympus Dive Center, tells the story of not just the fate of USS Schurz, but of her life and her crew as the SMS Geier roaming the world in support of Germany's interest. before and during WWI. The Schurz remains the only German Imperial Navy warship (the SMS Geier) captured by the United States Navr during the 1st World War.
